Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a routine eye exam and a medical eye exam?
A routine exam is designed to keep your vision sharp and up to date. It’s where we check how clearly you see, measure for glasses or contact lenses, and make sure your eyes look healthy overall. A medical eye exam, on the other hand, is focused on a specific problem. If you come in with symptoms like dryness, sudden blurriness, eye pain, or concerns about conditions such as glaucoma or diabetes, the visit shifts into a medical evaluation. That type of exam is aimed at diagnosing the cause, creating a treatment plan, and managing your ongoing care. If we discover a medical issue during a routine checkup, we’ll let you know right away and explain whether your visit needs to be billed as medical instead of routine.
How often should I schedule an eye exam?
For most healthy adults, every one to two years is a good rhythm. But if you have risk factors like diabetes, glaucoma in the family, or ongoing eye concerns, we’ll usually recommend checking in at least once a year, or more according to your doctor's recommendations.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring your everyday glasses or contacts, your insurance card, and a list of any medications you take. If you’ve had eye exams or eye health records elsewhere, those are helpful too, but don’t worry if you can’t track them down. Just come as you are, and we’ll guide you through the rest.
Are specialty services like dry eye treatment or scleral lenses covered by insurance?
Coverage depends on your plan. Routine exams and glasses are usually covered by vision insurance. More advanced treatments like dry eye therapies or specialty contact lenses often fall under medical insurance or are considered out-of-pocket depending on your plan. Our team will check your benefits for you and explain the costs clearly before you move forward, so there are no surprises.
